Wang Chung – “Dance Hall Days”

Everybody Wang Chung tonight

The “G” is pronounced “K”

Well done to 80s losers Wang Chung who not only appear in the Blender top 50 with their seminal meisterwerk “Everyone have fun tonight”, but also manage to pop up in our own top 50 with the often overlooked, but equally awful “Dance Hall Days”!

It’s clear that the same spirit that inspired Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Tennyson et al runs deeps in the veins of Wang Chung’s lyricist – I’m not actually sure as to whether its Wang or Chung – who are responsible for such gems as:

“Take your baby by the hand
And make her do a high hand stand
And take your baby by the heel
And do the next thing that you feel”

To me, the last line is particularly compelling – the blend of mysticism and playfulness reminds me vividly of Ginsbergs “Howl”

Of course, I’m only joking with you, dear reader – in reality it’s another blast of musical awfulness from Wang and Chung. It amazes me that stuff like this got released in the 80s. I guess the coke was really strong and it all made sense back then – just like Michael Jackson as a viable human being made sense to Pepsi executives.

A particular lowlight is the bizarre phrasing throughout and especially the chorus which, for reasons unknown, Wang (Or Chung – not sure which) sings like so:

We were so (big pause) in (big pause) phase (big pause)
In our (big pause) dance (big pause) hall (big pause) days
We were (big pause) cool (big pause) on (big pause) craze

Although what do I know – the video on YouTube has had a terrifying 11 million viewers. Looks like Wang and Chung are having the last laugh.

Worst Moment: The fact that the video has had 11 million views.
